Spain defeated France 88-76 on Sunday to win the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 gold medal after a thrilling competition. With 27 points and five rebounds, Toronto Raptors forward Juancho Hernangomez led the way for Spain. Their brother, Willy Hernangomez of the New Orleans Pelicans, chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds of his own.

With 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, Willy Hernangomez was crowned the tournament’s MVP. Evan Fournier of the New York Knicks led France with 23 points and two assists, and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves added six points and six rebounds. But ultimately, their output simply wasn’t sufficient to win the gold for France.

“It’s difficult to put into words how I feel. I am really proud of my colleagues, the coaching staff, and the entire Spanish federation, “Hernangomez commented on Spain’s triumph. “Because of how much we improved and progressed during the competition, we deserve this gold medal. It was very incredible. Inside the dressing room, there was a unique sense of trust. I feel really happy and pleased to be with those men. because they have always shown faith in me. Just being a member of this incredible team makes me grateful.”

Spain won their fourth gold medal in EuroBasket history with this triumph, all of which have come since 2009. Additionally, Spain triumphed in 2009, 2011, and 2015. Sergio Scariolo, the team’s head coach, was quite pleased with his team’s achievement in this year’s competition and was also responsible for all four of those gold medals.

“As a basketball coach, it’s simple to be content. We entered this competition with a power ranking number of 8, and we gradually improved,” Scariolo stated of his group. “We left behind fantastic teams, including this last one, a remarkable group of all-stars competing at the highest level in the EuroBasket. It’s incredible to see the final standings and realize that we are superior to all of those elite teams.

Scariolo continued, “I am thrilled for the team. “The journey has been wonderful. Let alone the kindness and human virtues that, of course, flood your spirit, I feel very glad because we played terrific basketball. Both our attack and defense were excellent. Due to our constraints, we may have had a sloppy offense and a basketball squad that scored few points. Instead, we excelled at basketball, passing the ball, making plenty of assists, being selfless, executing well, being patient when it was necessary, and getting through challenging situations as a team, not just as individuals. I simply like my job as a coach.”

Behind only the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, two teams that are no longer in existence, Spain now holds the third-highest total of gold medals won in EuroBasket history.Their
