The game ended 1-1 in regular time and the game went to a penalty shootout.

Malaysia scored in the 32nd minute when winger Safawi Rasid released a cross and left-back La’Vere Corbin Ong finished off brilliantly.

But it was the return of inspirational midfielder Brendan Gan to the national team after more than a year that caught the attention of many.

He impressed with his work rate and defensive performance in the first half as he made numerous interceptions and kept Thailand’s midfield quiet with incessant pressing.

In the second half, the home side picked up the pace and created numerous chances, but hit the wall in the form of Ahmad Syihan Hazmi.

The Malaysian goalkeeper saved two goal and made a single-handedly stop in the 72nd minute, which was equally brilliant.

Malaysia’s flaw was midfielder Nor Azam Azih who was sent off in the 92nd minute after receiving a second yellow card for a poor challenge on Thai midfielder Sumanya Purisai.

This led to an equaliser for Thailand, with Purisai’s brilliant set-piece being blocked by centre-back Pansa Hemviboon.

The game went into a penalty shootout, with captain Dion Coors, striker Syafiq Ahmad, right-back Matthew Davies, left-back and Malaysian rookie Declan Lambert burying their penalties and Corbin scored the winning penalty.

Syihan was the hero as he saved Thailand’s fourth penalty by winger Supachok Sarachat.

Thailand’s penalty kicks were scored by midfielder Pathompol Charoenrattanapirom, striker Suphanat Muenta and centre-back Kritsada Kaman.

Malaysia will face Tajikistan in the final on September 25 at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium.
