Bridget Carlton scored 19 points as Canada’s women’s basketball team went unbeaten at the FIBA World Cup and the fourth-placed Canada secured their place in the quarter-finals with the victory.
Canada Advance Quarter-Finals in FIBA World Cup Undefeated Since Opening
Shay Colley had 13 points, Laeticia Amihere had 10 and Kayla Alexander grabbed 11 rebounds.
WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx forward Carleton also had six rebounds.
Maki Takada scored 11 points to lead 10th-ranked Japan, the reigning Olympic silver medallists.
The Canadians next face Australia on Monday before wrapping up their preliminaries against Mali on Tuesday.
Canada went scoreless in the first four minutes, but took the lead late in the first quarter and went into the second with a 20-12 lead.
Japan cut Canada’s lead to 3 points with 4:17 left in the first half, but Canada ended the game with a 13-0 run to lead 41-25 at the break.
Canada’s suffocating defence forced Japan to 10 turnovers in the first half.
Canada continued the momentum in the third quarter when Carleton’s 3-pointer with 1:19 left gave Canada into the fourth with a 61-39 lead.

Canada To Face Australia In Quarter-Finals in FIBA World Cup
Canada opened the World Cup with a 67-60 win over Serbia, then beat France 59-45.
Australia beat Serbia 69-54 earlier on Sunday and beat Mali 118-58 on Saturday.
